Dear distinguished guests and participants,
I would like to express my gratitude to the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in the UK (KSEAUK), The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) and eight other Korean Scientists and Engineers Associations in Europe for hosting the 16th Europe-Korea Conference on Science and Technology (EKC).
Since its first launch in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2008, EKC has grown into a premier scientific and social gathering for European and Korean scientists and engineers. This conference serves as more than just a forum for the exchange of ideas and innovations; it embodies the essence of collaboration and partnership between Korean institutes and their potential counterparts in the UK and Europe. Through the tireless dedication of fellow scientists and engineers across the region, we are forging pathways to impactful collaborations and groundbreaking discoveries.
The ongoing global transition towards fostering a secure and protected environment underscores the critical role of collaborative partnerships spanning various sectors and regions. Thus, the theme of this year’s conference resonates deeply, encapsulating the call for global solidarity driven by innovative cross-sectoral collaboration. It also reflects our shared commitment to harnessing the power of science and technology to shape a bright future for all.
In embarking on a comprehensive initiative to foster advanced industries, the Korean government has identified 12 national strategic technologies as pivotal drivers of Korea’s future growth, propelling the nation toward a sustainable society. At the heart of this endeavour lies in enhancing international collaboration, a key policy measure aimed at bolstering economic security not only domestically but also on the global stage. Moreover, the government is emphasizing investment in international cooperation “to achieve first-in-class innovation capabilities and foster top tier talent through global partnerships” in order to build stronger alliances with countries that share similar values, creating a solid foundation for mutual progress.
As core innovation actors in Korea, government-funded research institutes (GRIs) are not only instrumental in attaining national strategic technologies but also dedicated to addressing global challenges. Through their pioneering research and collaborations with global counterparts, GRIs are exemplifying their pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future.
I believe this conference will be a venue for meaningful discussions, exchange insights; moreover, an opportunity to cultivate new avenues for collaboration. May it indeed act as a catalyst for impactful partnerships, paving the way for transformative advancements that will shape the future of science and technology.
Thank you.
